Who Are Royal Doulton?
Royal Doulton are a famous English ornament manufacturer, whose origin came from the stoneware trade in the earl 1800's. Today, Royal Doulton is a household name in tableware and collectables with a world class pedigree dating back to 1815 in London. These days, the company is headquartered in Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire, England and it is now part of the hugely successful and respected Waterford Wedgwood group.
Royal Doulton (commonly mispelt as Royal Daulton or Royal Dalton) started out as a small partnership in Lambeth, London, in 1815. The partners specialised in manufacturing stoneware bottles and sewer pipes. The big turnaround for the company came during the Victorian revolution in hygiene and sanitation and proved crucial for the partnership, providing it with a base on which to develop a portfolio of tableware and commemoratives from.
During the Victorian years, the company relocated to Nile Street, Burslem in 'The Potteries' in 1882. It managed to obtain a Royal Warrant in 1901 which effectively allowed it to put the 'royal' into Royal Doulton. Since then, it has focused entirely on developing a culture of innovation and quality - derived from almost 100 years of heritage - which still lives on today, in 2008, in its highly sought after tableware and collectables.
